Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a cost-effective cosmetic dentistry procedure that improves the appearance of your smile. Our dentists use tooth-colored resin material to disguise cracks and chips, reshape a tooth, cover a gap between teeth, and more. If you want to improve your smile and learn more about dental bonding, the first step is to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation at Capitol Dental Associates.
More About Dental Bonding
Our dentists use bonding material for cosmetic procedures. This is the same material used to fill cavities, replace old dental fillings made from silver amalgam, and protect the roots of teeth that have started to sustain damage due to gum recession. In addition to the common cosmetic issues listed above, our dentists use bonding material to make your teeth look longer if you have what we refer to as a gummy smile. People with a gummy smile have gums covering more of their teeth than normal.
What to Expect During a Dental Bonding Appointment
Your dentist first shows you several shades of artificial teeth and asks you to select the one closest to your natural shade. Then, your dentist ensures that the bonding material applied to your tooth is the shade you prefer. Below are the remaining steps in the process.
- Your dentist prepares your tooth by roughening it with a dental cloth and then applying a conditioning liquid. The liquid helps the bonding materials adhere to your tooth.
- Your dentist applies resin-like material, which has a putty-like consistency, to your tooth. The material is flexible enough for your dentist to mold into the desired shape.
- After the resin and conditioning liquid has remained on your tooth for several minutes, your dentist shines a curing light over it to speed up the hardening of the materials.
- The last step is to polish your tooth and make any necessary adjustments, such as trimming away excess putty.
The procedure typically takes 60 minutes or less from start to finish.
