Emergency Dental Care
Emergency dental care is any service that requires immediate attention. We encourage you to contact Capitol Dental Associates right away if you are experiencing uncontrolled bleeding pain or trauma to the mouth. These situations are urgent because they threaten your future oral health if not assessed and treated promptly.
Examples of Common Dental Emergencies
Below are four examples of dental conditions that need immediate intervention.
Dental abscess
A dental abscess causes painful swelling of your face and jaw. Abscesses originate as small, pimple-like growths around the root of a tooth or the small gap between your teeth and gums. An untreated dental abscess is dangerous because the infection can spread from your mouth to other parts of your body.
Injury to the cheeks, gums, lips, or tongue
We refer to injuries to these as soft tissue injuries, which often cause uncontrolled bleeding. You can rinse your mouth with saltwater, bite on a clean piece of gauze to control the bleeding, take non-prescription pain relievers, and/or hold a cold compress to your face before coming to see us. These solutions will temporarily control the pain and bleeding, but you need a dentist to inspect and treat the damage.
Knocked out tooth
If your tooth has completely dislodged from its socket, grab it by the part you can usually see above your gum line. Rinse the tooth off, place it back in its socket, and bite down on a gauze pad until you can get to Capitol Dental Associates. Our dentist will do everything possible to reattach your tooth, but if that is not possible, we will explain your options for tooth replacement.
Severe toothache
When you have tried home remedies like taking over-the-counter medications, applying an ice pack to your face, and/or rinsing your mouth with warm water to no avail, please do not hesitate to contact us for an appointment. Severe tooth pain that does not go away could indicate a larger problem, such as an abscess or need for a root canal.
The above are just four types of emergency dental care in Hartford, CT. Please reach out anytime if you need immediate attention from our dentist.
